Her story
Adi the Adipose made her way across the ocean, relocating from Cardiff, Wales to Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada. After rooming for several months at a local comic book store, Adi met her human and future room mate, Mike Montgomery. Despite several rough patches (most notably an incident involving a Velgaran Heat Ray and several lamp posts on the Halifax Waterfront) the pair have become a true 21st century "odd couple."
Adi dabbled in numerous ventures early on during this partnership, such as a brief foray into politics under the "Drunk 'n Disorderly" banner with local celebrity Fat Apollo. 2012 saw Adi's debut at the 3rd annual Halifax Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention known as "Hal-Con," and magic was made. The overwhelmingly positive reception would result in Adi taking on a position as a part time booth buddy at Hal-con events as well as joining other Con participants in city parades throughout the year and bringing a degree of "Parade Luck" that would see Hal-Con win an award at virtually every parade Adi would attend.
Adi's Hal-Con association has also lead to her career as a writer. First with her blog, the "Shenanigans Support Centre" (aditheadipose.tumblr.com) which was started as a chronicle of her adventures on the set of "The Day of the Doctor." It also lead to her position as Whovian Correspondent on the GvN Online Magazine at www.geeksversusnerds.com with her column "Chewing the Fat."
The Shenanigans loving Ball of Fat has managed to leverage her mastery of #weaponizedcute into tremendous success in social media. From live tweeting B-Movies (including a two hour chat with the director of “Nazis at the Center of the Earth”) to her semi-nightly coverage of “InnerSpace” where she was named the Twitter Host for the first “InnerSpace: Best of Morgan Hoffman” TV special by show subject and Adi’s #TwitterSister Morgan Hoffman, as well as pitching several segments aired on the show, including the surprise hit “A Troll to Cry For.”
In 2014, Adi entered the world of art, teaming with Martime artist Kelly-Jo Romard for the release of the first ever “Adi the Adipose Trading Card set,” depicting Adi in numerous geek properties, with fifty percent of the proceeds donated to the IWK Children’s Hospital. She partnered with designer Karyn O’Connell to enter the world of Cosplay, debuting several new costumes at Hal-Con 2014: “Darth Adipem – Dark Lady of the Sith,” “Helen-ipose” (Orphan Black Clone Helena) as well as “Fat Adi-pollo,” the first known and officially endorsed Fat Apollo cosplay. Combined with an upgraded “Harleypose” (Harley Quinn), “Weaponized Cute Cosplay” was launched in late 2014. 2015 saw the addition of “Overgrowth Ninja Rabbit Avatar” from the webseries “HapHead,” to the list of her cosplay firsts as well as "Christopher Nolan's Bat-Mite," and "Adi-Rella".
In 2015, Adi was nominated for a “Shorty Award,” placing sixth in nominations while competing against Social Media Titans with ten times her online presence. Over the past several years, Adi the Adipose has campaigned for to make the ballot for the Coast Magazine's "Best of Halifax" campaign, finally becoming a nominee for "Best Local Character" in 2018. A program to use cosplay to pay tribute to notable members of the Halifax Geek Community, begun in 2014, would see Adi's first foray into armoured cosplay with the Mandalorian armoured "Laetus Rook" and acceptance into local cosplay group "Maritime Heavy Armour." These tributes would also see the only cosplay of a Hal-Con volunteer, in honor of the numerous individuals who have donated their time to the community on a regular basis.
It has not been all sunshine and roses for the little ball of sentient fat. Adi's partnership with Karyn O'Connell came to an amicable end in early 2017, however issues arose when a highly recommended replacement failed their first order and immediately disappeared from the internet. Cosplay plans were, however, fortunately saved by Stephanie O'Donnell and a new partnership was formed. 2018 would also see the surprise cancellation of "InnerSpace," a show that Adi had become very much synonymous with over the preceding five years. Her response? A social media retrospective that utilized both personal memories and YouTube clips, and lasted for more than two weeks.
Whenever possible, Adi can be found visiting geek conventions around the country, having visited Toronto's Fan Expo on two previous occasions (most notably meeting her own cosplay idol at the 2017 Expo) as well as Montreal Comic-Con, helping out with the Out of the Broom Closet booth and meeting "Doctor Who" and "Arrow" star John Barrowman. She can often be found doing photo shoots around Halifax, patronising any and all Halifax “licensed establishments,” or online Troll hunting.
